What to expect at your First Mammogram Appointment - Guide For Hamilton OBSP Mammo Patients. Get Ready with Limeworth X-RAY!

A mammogram is an essential tool in the early detection of breast cancer, and if you're getting ready for your first one, you may have questions about what to expect. At Limeworth X-Ray, an Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) site in Hamilton, we make the experience as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Here’s what you need to know to prepare for your first mammo and why our clinic is the best choice for your screening in Hamilton, Ontario.

What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that captures detailed images of the breast to detect early signs of breast cancer. Cancer Care Ontario recommends regular screenings for eligible women (age 40+) to catch potential issues before symptoms arise, increasing the chances of successful treatment. In this article, we will help you understand what to expect at your first mammogram appointment

How to Prepare for Your Mammogram

  • Schedule at the Right Time

    • If you’re premenopausal, try to book your appointment when your breasts are least tender, usually one week after your period.

  • Avoid Certain Products

    • On the day of your appointment, do not wear deodorant, perfume, lotion, or powder, as these can interfere with the X-ray images.

  • Wear Comfortable Clothing

    • A two-piece outfit is ideal, as you’ll only need to remove your top.

  • Bring Your Health Card

    • If you are part of the OBSP, your screening is covered by OHIP.

    • Please note, a doctor's referral is not needed for screening

  • Relax and Communicate

    • Our professional staff has done 100's of mammograms, and will guide you through the process and answer any questions you have.

What to Expect at your First Mammogram Appointment

At Limeworth X-Ray, your mammogram will be completed in about 15-20 minutes.

During the procedure:

  1. You will stand in front of the mammogram machine.

  2. A technologist will position your breast on the machine’s plate.

  3. Another plate will press down on the breast for a few seconds to take the X-ray.

  4. The process is repeated for different angles.

While some discomfort is normal, the compression is brief and necessary for clear imaging.
